Centre for Environmental Management

Professor John Rolfe

Welcome to the Centre for Environmental Management (CEM). As Director, I am pleased to welcome you to our research centre.

The Centre for Environmental Management is about providing knowledge and skills to achieve environmentally sustainable development in the dry tropics. It has six main fields of endeavour - marine, coastal, terrestrial and freshwater ecology, environmental resource economics, ecotoxicology & some associated social studies. The focus is on issues associated with sustainable regional development, accounting for the costs of environmental impact, biodiversity management, rehabilitation success, ecosystem functional indicators of environmental performance and integrated regional monitoring.  Research in the Centre also provides an integrated perspective on:

  • natural resource and biodiversity studies,
  • environmental and anthropogenic influences on natural systems,
  • environmental and ecosystem health indicators,
  • development and application of management systems,
  • valuing natural resources, and
  • pursuing community outcomes.

The Centre for Environmental Management has staff and operations at Gladstone, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Mackay.  It is one of the largest research centres at CQUniversity, with approximately 30 research and technical staff and more than $2 million each year in external research income.

This site also provides links to our partners:

Enjoy your exploration and please contact the Centre if you have any questions or if you have an issue with which the Centre may be able to assist.
