The Centre aims to provide knowledge and skills to achieve environmentally sustainable development. The Centre works in association with Government, Industry and other stakeholders to research and facilitate sustainable environmental management.

Capacity
The Centre undertakes independent research, contract research, consulting and post graduate studies in its six areas of expertise:
- Marine and Coastal Ecology
- Terrestrial Ecology
- Freshwater Ecology
- Ecotoxicology and Industrial Waters
- Environmental Economics
- Sustainable Regional Development
The Centre's focus is on issues associated with sustainable regional development, accounting for the costs of environmental impacts, biodiversity management, rehabilitation success, and ecosystem functional indicators of environmental performance and integrated regional monitoring. Research in the Centre also provides an integrated perspective on issues such as; natural resource development, environmental anthropogenic influences on natural systems, environmental ecosystem health indicators, development and application of management systems, valuing natural resources, and pursuing community outcomes. The Centre for Environmental Management has staff and operations at Gladstone, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, and Mackay. It is one of the largest research centres at CQUniversity, with approximately 30 research and technical staff. The Centre's facilities include full equipped laboratories, boats and field sampling equipment for all types of research. The Centre engages with industry and government in Contract Research, Consulting, Competitive Grants and Tenders.
